WANITA juga memainkan peranan yang penting dan turut diberi peluang untuk menyumbang kepada kemajuan sains serta teknologi dengan penghasilan pelbagai inovasi. Berdasarkan statistik yang dikeluarkan Pertubuhan Pendidikan Saintifik dan Kebudayaan Pertubuhan Bangsa-Bangsa Bersatu (UNESCO), terdapat kira-kira 30 peratus penyelidik di seluruh dunia terdiri daripada wanita. Di Sime Darby Plantation dianggarkan terdapat 140 saintis di seluruh Malaysia dengan 52 peratus yang terbabit dalam pasukan penyelidikan dan pembangunan (R&D) adalah wanita.

Salah seorang daripada mereka adalah Pengurus Makmal Pembiakan Molekular, Dr Sukganah Apparow yang cukup disegani dalam bidang penyelidikan di dalam dan luar negara. Antara projek besar yang dijalankan adalah berjaya menghasilkan benih sawit Genom Terpilih yang mampu mengeluarkan minyak lebih banyak tanpa perlu meningkatkan keluasan tanah. Menerusi projek ini, Sime Darby menjadi syarikat pertama di negara ini menerima pingat gangsa dalam Anugerah Edison 2017 di New York, Amerika Syarikat.

“Sebab kita perlu faham kerja di makmal ini menuntut kesabaran yang tinggi kerana bukan semua eksperimen yang dijalankan memberikan hasil pada hari sama. Kadangkala memakan masa yang sangat lama.

“Kita juga akan lakukan perkara sama secara berulang-ulang kali sehingga menyebabkan seseorang itu cepat bosan. Tidak pelik apabila ramai dalam kalangan rakan saya beralih arah,” katanya.

Sehubungan itu, beliau menasihatkan individu terutama wanita yang ingin terbabit dalam bidang ini supaya lebih fokus dengan perkara yang ingin dilakukan.

“Mereka perlu rasai dulu bagaimana kerja di makmal kemudian kalau rasa sesuai saya galakkan teruskan sehingga ijazah Doktor Falsafah (PhD) kerana ia banyak membantu apabila bekerja kelak,” katanya.

Perkara sama diakui Pengurus Bahagian Industri Mikrobiologi, Julia Ibrahim yang bersyukur apabila diberi peluang menjadi sebagai sebahagian pasukan penyelidik di Sime Darby.

“10 tahun dahulu perlu diakui terutama dalam bidang teknologi dan penyelidikan, negara ini kurang peluang pekerjaan. Ramai rakan terpaksa mencari bidang lain untuk bekerja.

“Di sini sememangnya syarikat memberi sokongan penuh tanpa mengira perbezaan jantina,” katanya.

“Sebagai penyelidik, bukan sepenuh masa kami berada di makmal dan kami perlu turut ke ‘site’ untuk membuat kajian serta mengambil sampel di sana.

“Di sini kepakaran pekerja ladang yang majoritinya terdiri daripada lelaki banyak membantu kerana mereka berpengalaman dalam bidang mereka,” katanya.

Dalam pada itu, Pengurus Bahagian Industri Bioteknologi Dr Lim Chin Ming berpendapat cabaran sebagai wanita dalam bidang ini ialah pembahagian masa antara keluarga dan pekerjaan.

“Tambahan pula, sekarang saya perlu menjaga anak sulung yang menghadapi autisme.

Bagi Pengurus Bahagian Industri Kimia Dr Teh Huey Fang, tugasnya turut memerlu kannya turun ke kilang dan ladang kelapa sawit untuk mengambil sampel.

“Saya sangat bersyukur majikan dan rakan sekerja sangat memahami perkara ini selain sentiasa membantu,” katanya.
